What is Pay Per Click (PPC)

Pay Per Click (PPC) adverts are the boxes usually shown on the right hand side of search results and the top section above the natural listings called 'sponsored links'.

The adverts work by bidding on keywords and phrases; the higher your bid, the higher your advert is placed. One of the best features of PPC is that you only pay for your advert when someone clicks on it, hence the name 'Pay Per Click', so you can set up hundreds of key phrases and you only pay when one is clicked.

There are three key players in the PPC industry; Google, Overture and Miva (formerly Espotting). These three companies feed the majority of the search networks and each has slightly different user demographics (for example, Overture supply Yahoo and MSN) and user functionality. As such it is advisable to run PPC campaigns in all these systems to obtain maximum coverage/exposure.

Pay Per Click - PPC Campaigns

In a PPC agreement, the advertiser only pays for qualifying clicks to the destination site based on a prearranged per-click rate. Popular PPC advertising options include per-click advertising networks, search engines, and affiliate programs. PPC Campaigns are often carried out as part of an online marketing strategy and in conjunction with Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).

Pay Per Click is sometimes seen by some as a middle ground between paying per impression and paying per action. When paying per impression, the advertiser assumes the risk of low-quality traffic generated by the publisher. When getting paid for actions, the publisher assumes the risk of low-converting offers by the advertiser. In the PPC model, the publisher does not have to worry about the sales conversion rate of the target site, and the advertiser does not have to worry about how many impressions it takes to attract the specified number of clicks.
